AQA chapter 2.1 Flashcards
What is the second stage of digestion?
Chemical digestion - breaks down large, insoluble molecules into smaller soluble ones. Molecules broken down by enzymes by the process of hydrolysis.
What is the first stage in digestion?
Physical breakdown - food is broken down by the teeth into smaller parts. Makes it possible for the food to be digested and gives a large surface area for chemical digestion.
What do the enzymes carbohydrases break down?
Carbohydrases break down carbohydrates into monosaccharides.
What do the enzymes lipases break down?
Lipases break down lipids (fats and oils) into fatty acids and glycerol.
What do the enzymes proteases break down?
Proteases break down proteins into amino acids.
What is assimilation?
The processes in which the digested food is absorbed and incorporated into the muscle tissue.
