Created territories of Kansas and Nebraska ope for settlement. repealed Missouri Compromise allowing white male settlers in territory to determine through popular sovereignty to allow slavery or not

“free soil, free speech, free labor, free men.” Viewed slavery as economically inefficient.
Civil War
1861-1865
Originally started for the fight for Confederacy back, underlying meaning was slavery.
Emancipation Proclamation

“all persons held as slaves” within the rebellious states “are, and henceforward shall be free.” showed civil war was actually about slavery.
13th Amendment
ONE THREE SLAVES ARE FREE - slavery is abolished
14th Amendment
ONE FOUR CITIZENS GALORE - African Americans are given citizenship and due process of law is affirmed.
15th Amendment
ONE FIVE THE VOTE’S ARRIVED - Black males are given the right to vote.
Sharecropping
landowner allows a tenant to use the land in return for a share of the crops produced on the land.
Reconstruction
1865-1877
Reconstructing the US tried to bring south back to normal as quickly as possible.
