Industrialized countries needed raw materials
European powers ruled many colonies and needed strong militaries to rule them
Competition for colonies in Africa and Asia led to empire rivalry

Many ethnic groups in empires wanted independent countries of their own
Many felt their country/ethnic group was superior to others
Blind devotion caused people to trust dangerous leaders
What was the Balkan Peninsula called prior to WWI
Part of the country Austria-Hungary, the Balkans housed lots of different ethnicities, many of whom wanted independent countries
Short term causes of WW1
Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir of throne to Austria-Hungary. Serbia nationalists wanted Serbia to be a country for Slavic people. Lots of slabs in Bosnia, which was owned by Austria-Hungary. Serbia terrorists thought killing archduke would lead to them giving Serbia Bosnia.
