Which major countries were fascist before WWII? Which wanted to expand their territory?
Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Japan (arguably). Italy, Germany, and Japan were committed to expansion
What were major things the Nazis believed in?
A strong Germany-All German speaking
The Fuhrer is the unquestioned leader
Lebensraum-“living space” Germany has the right to expand
Jews and Communists are enemies (Often seen as one in the same)
Autarky (Germany should be self-sufficient)
Social Darwinism (Aryan race=superior)
How did the Nazis gain power in Germany?
They were elected, then Hitler made every other power illegal and gave more power to himself.
What did Hitler and the Nazis do that won them popularity in Germany?
Stabilized the economy
Decided not to follow the treaty of Versailles
Built Autobahn (freeway system)
Restored sense of pride
What was the Hitler youth and League of German Girls about? Were these programs successful?
It was like a youth camp for Germany, and it was very successful as a propaganda tool.

13 million innocent people died in the Holocaust. What groups were specifically targeted?
Jews, communists, Romani (gypsies), mentally ill, criminals, homosexuals
Why did Nazis hate Jewish people?
Stabbed Germany in the back as spies and traitors, which is why Germany lost the war
Greedy and responsible for Germany’s financial problems
Racially inferior
Only 1% of Germany and easy to pick on as a minority
A false document titled “The protocols of the Elders of Zion” made in Russia claimed that Jews were conspiring to control the world
Long history of Christian hatred of Jews: blood libel, traitors, scapegoat, practiced usury, and we’re greedy bankers, pogroms

Asia: Japan invaded China (1931, 1937)
Europe: Germany invaded Poland (1939)

4 long-term causes of WWII
Conquest of new lands by fascist countries, especially Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan
Bad economic times meant that many countries were not willing to fight
Harsh WWI treaty agreements with Germany caused a rise of more extreme solutions (Nazis)
The Failure of the league of Nations (3 reasons)- countries like USA and USSR were absent. Countries were war-weary and hesitated upon attacking powerful countries. No actions for civil wars
