A

Slavery ended differently depending on the time and place.
In general, the last place to give up slavery was the middle east.
The USA civil war was about slavery and it was the most violent end to it.
Slavery was made illegal, but it still exists illegally and the exploitation of people didn’t end

What were some reasons for the common school movement in the 1800s

A

Ethical to have children learn instead of work a job
Businesses wanted people to be literate and know basic math
Way to assimilate certain groups of people (influence their culture)

A

First: suffrage, property rights, education, and some career opportunities for women.
Second: workplace equality, reproductive rights(abortion, birth control), anti-sexism

In the abolition movement in the west, what were some arguments to end slavery?

A

Abolitionists wanted to free all slaves at once, citing moral reasons or Christian teachings
The back to Africa movement sought to free the slaves and ship them back to Africa; died out in the mid-1800s
There was a struggle to first end the slave trade and then end institution of slavery. Some thought the institution would naturally die out.

A

Some justified slavery with bible teachings
Racial superiority; now disproven, the idea was that whites were superior and needed to “take care of” blacks like a parent
Some thought we don’t have a right to force others to end slavery and it would be too costly

What was great Britain’s role in the abolition movement and slavery?

A

A mixed legacy; the #2 slave trader over time, but a leader in the Abolition movement. #1 world empire and Navy in the 1800s.
Fought slave ships on high seas (they had the #1 navy and toon any slave ships they caught)
Ended slave trade in 1807 and and slavery in colonies in 1834 (1843 in India)
The government decided to pay former slave owners for their slaves
