Culture is learned and passed on from previous generations
Culture is Shared
Thru Group or society that thinks or acts in particular ways
Example of Shared culture
in North America, marriage involves two people
Subculture:
share characteristics of the overall culture, but also have important distinctive ideas and behaviors
Example of subculture
vegetarian, motorcycle enthusiasts
Culture Defines Nature by:
The material objects and customs produced by a group of people are influenced by the environment around them
Examples of Culture defines nature:
tools are made from materials that are available. If there are no stones, then tools would be made out of wood, bone or antlers.
Culture Shapes How We Perceive and Understand the World:
Based on how we are raised and what we observe
Culture has Patterns
How are culture patterns FORMED?
Patterns are formed through economics, politics, and values
Certain core values and worldviews are usually taken for granted by members of that culture
We are not aware of values because they can seem self-evident
Ethnology:
Is the study of the origins and cultures of different people

Ethnology and Ethnography:
Ethnography:
The written account of a culture, post field work
A more in-depth view of a specific culture
Ethnology examines areas such as:
marriage customs, kinship patterns, political and economic systems, religion, art, music, technology.
Ethnology is through:
participant observation
