Biology Organelle Functions Flashcards
Science
This organelle is the control centre of the cell (surrounded by the nuclear membrane)
Nucleus
This organelle is the fluid substance in a cell
It is where chemical reactions occur
Cytoplasm
This organelle gives support to the cell
controls the movement of materials in and out of the
cell (semi-permeable)
The Cell Membrane
role varies depending on type of cell
can be used for storage of food, removing waste,
maintaining fluid pressure, etc.
Vacuoles
This organelle Contains the green pigment chlorophyll, used in photosynthesis
Chloroplasts
This organelle protects and supports the plant cell
Cell Wall
“power plants” of the cell
it produces energy for cell functions
active cells have many mitochondria while inactive
cells have fewer
Mitochondria
Is the network of branching tubes attached to the nucleus.
- A passageway for materials moving to and from
different parts of the cell - Site of protein synthesis (after code from nucleus’
DNA is read)
The Endoplasmic Reticulum
This organelle is NOT attached to nucleus
- It collects and processes materials to be removed
from/used by the cell - It Modifies proteins that come from the E.R.’s ribosomes
- And the Proteins’ shapes affect their function!
Golgi Bodies
This organelle makes protein and is found attached to the E.R. or free floating in the
cytoplasm.
Ribosomes
