Business treating employees as a cost

Business treat employees as an asset
-the most important resource of the business and a source of competitive advantage
What is the focus of hard hrm?
Identify the workforce needs of the business and recruit and manage accordingly (hiring, moving and firing)
What are the key features of the hard approach?
- short term changes in employee numbers
- minimal communication, from the top down
- motivation, focus on financial methods
- little empowerment or delegation
- taller organisational structures
- suits autocratic leadership styles
What is the focus of a soft approach to HRM?
to concentrate on the needs of the employees, their roles, rewards, motivation etc
What are the key features of soft HRM?
- strong and regular two way communication
- competitive pay with performance related rewards
- motivation (non-financial methods)
- focus on job design and job satisfaction
- flatter organisational structures
- suits democratic leadership style
