This is the idea that the world is a set of places and each place and be studied and is distinct.
What does the social constructive approach see place as?
This sees place as a product of a particular set of social processes occurring at a particular time.
What is an example of a social constructive approach?
Trafalgar Square
What was Trafalgar Square built to commemorate?
It was built to commemorate the British naval victory in the 1800s.
What could Trafalgar Square be understood to be as?
It could be understood to be as a place of empire and colonialism.
What is the phenomenological approach interested in?
This is interested in how a particular person experiences place, recognising a highly personal relationship and person.
What is the phenomenological approach not interested in?
The unique characteristics of a place or why it was constructed.
What does the term “topophilia” describe?
The affective bond between people and place.
How do we get to know places?
Through human perception and experience.
What is critical in our understanding of place?
The degree of attachment, involvement and concern that a person or group have for a particular place is critical in our understanding of place.
