Approaches - social learning theory Flashcards
Overall assumptions
Social Learning approach agreed with the behavioural approach that all behaviour is learnt through experience.
However, they believe that this learning takes place through observation and imitation of other people’s behaviour NOT association.
What is slt?
= This approach suggests that behaviour is learnt through observing a role model’s behaviour and imitating this behaviour.
A person is more likely to imitate this behaviour if the role model is being rewarded for displaying that behaviour (this is known as vicarious reinforcement
What are the four mediational processes?
= Attention: This is the extent to which a person pays attention to what they are observing, in order to imitate they need to pay attention to the behaviour.
- Retention: This is how well the behaviour is remembered, a person has to remember what they have seen to repeat it.
- Reproduction: This means that the behaviour has to be realistic so the person can physically be able to repeat the behaviour. Unrealistic behaviour e.g. is not likely to be repeated as the person cannot physically do it.
- Motivation: To imitate the behaviour there must be some motivation, if the role model was rewarded for the behaviour
