Approaches Ao3 Flashcards
Evaluate introspection
Strength- scientific, systematic and well controlled. Controlled extraneous variables. Carefully standardised.
Limitation- Subjective data, relied on self reporting techniques so data is subjective.
Evaluate modern psychology
Strength- claims to be scientific, use scientific studies including lab experiments.
Limitation- not all approaches use objective methods , some focus on individuals and subjective experiences.
Evaluate the behaviourist approach
Strengths- well controlled research, observable highly controlled experiments. extraneous variables are removed. Scientific credibility.
Real life application- conditioning can be applied to real world problems eg prisons.
Limitations- oversimplified behaviour, ignores influence of biology and cognition. Suggests learning is more complex than the observable behaviour alone.
Ethical issues- experiments subjected animals to unethical condition.
Evaluate social learning theory
Strengths- recognises the importance of behaviourist and cognitive factors. provides a more comprehensive explanation (mediational processes)
Real world application- can explain cultural differences in behaviour and can account for how children learn.
