Psychodynamic Approach
is a perspective that describes the different forces, most of which are unconscious, that operate on the mind and direct human experience and behaviour
3 levels in the mind:
-conscious
-preconscious
-unconscious
3 components of structure of personality

-the Ego
-the Superego
The Id
-primative
-operates on pleasure principle
-unconscious drives and instincts
-presented at birth
-selfish
The Ego
-reality
-mediator between the other two
-2 yrs
-reduce conflict between id and superego
-defence mechanisms
The Superego
formed at the end of the phallic stage
-internalised sense of right and wrong
-moral
-punishes the ego for wrongdoing (guilt)
What happens when a balance between the structures isn’t achieved?
abnormal behaviour results, anxiety disorders
Oral Stage
-0-1
-focus of pleasure is the mouth - desiring the mother’s breast
-oral fixation
-smoking, nailbiting, sarcasm or over-critical
Anal Stage
-1-3
-focus of pleasure is the anus - pleasure witholding or expelling faeces
-anal retentive - perfectionist/obsessive
-anal expulsive- thoughtless/reckless
Phallic Stage
-3-6
-focus of pleasure is genital area
-oedipus or electra complex
-phallic personality - narcissistic, reckless, possibly homosexual
Latency Stage
-6-12
-Earlier conflicts are repressed
Genital Stage
-puberty onwards
-sexual desires become conscious
-primary source of pleasure is persuit of heterosexual relationships
-if not met, difficulty forming heterosexual relationships
Defense mechanisms
unconscious strategies used by the ego to manage anxiety caused by conflict between the parts of the personality
Repression
forcing a distressed memory out of the conscious mind
Denial
refusing to acknowledge some aspect of reality
