approaches Flashcards
what are the strength and weakness of
psychodynamic
weakness:
not scientific -unfalsifiable
ability to be both proved and disproved
strengths :
highly applicable
the freudian slip
what are the strengths and limitations for humanistic approach
weakness :
This approach doesn’t focus on specific factors/elements to explain behaviour – it does not reduce behaviour down to small components
strength :
ow applicable is the approach to real life?
Client-centred therapy?
Real life examples of self-actualisers?
what are the strengths and limitations for cognitive
strengths
Methods are empirical – they provide physical, tangible evidence
This makes the evidence more likely to be valid, and scientifically credible
weakness:
The cognitive approach has been criticised for being ‘machine’ reductionist – it literally reduces humans down to machines (computers)
what are the strengths and limitations of SLE
One strength of SLT is that it can explain individual differences
mediational processes
weakness
SLT fails to take any biological factors into account when explaining behaviour
It only uses the environment, along with mental processes in its explanation
what are the strengths and limitations for behaviourist approach
weakness:
it is very deterministic
not generalisable
Use of animals: extrapolation
Extrapolation: applying the behaviour of non-human animals to humans
Because Pavlov and Skinner only tested animals
strength:
The behaviourist approach is considered to be highly scientific.
what are the psycho sexual stages
- oral -focus of pleasure is the mouth (0-1)
2.anal-focus of pleasure is the anus (1-3)
3.phallic stage -focus of pleasure is the genital area (3-5)
4.latency -earlier conflicts are repressed
5.genital -sexual desires become conscious
outline humanistic approach
Every individual has free will and chooses their behaviour
Every individual aims to self-actualise and fulfil their potential
To self-actualise a hierarchy of needs must be met, with more basic ‘deficiency’ needs being met first
outline cognitive approach
Internal mental processes direct and shape our behaviour
Mental processes are studied indirectly by making inferences on the basis of their behaviour
Individuals use schema to help interpret incoming information quickly
