What are common GI complaints?
Heartburn, stomach flu (vomiting diarrhea), constipation
What is enteritis?
Inflammation of the SI
What is cystitis?
Inflammation of the urinary bladder
What are the steps of a PE?
Inspection, auscultation, percussion, palpation (special/diagnostic tests)
What are ROS alarm sx?
Dysphagia, odynophagia, hematochezia, melena
What is odynophagia?
Painful swallowing
What is borborygmi?
Significant increase in peristalsis which may cause audible or palpable bowel activity (hunger sounds amplified)
What is tenesmus?
Sense of incomplete emptying
What are common causes of gastroenteritis?
Viral (norovirus - cruise ships; rotavirus - infants, young children)
Bacterial (salmonella, shigella, campylobacter - travels diarrhea)
and parasitic (Giardia, cryptsospordium - impure water)
Describe tax for diarrhea (behavioral model)
Gut rest (frequent small amounts of liquid)
Hydration with clear fluids
Eliminating offending agent
Address SD
What are associated sx for constipation?
Abdominal bloating, low back pain, tenesmus, pain on defecation
Rectal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, inability to pass flatus or vomiting*
What are common causes for constipation?
Delaying defecation, diet, exercise, medications, endocrine dysfunction
What is some Tx for constipation?
Address dietary needs Increase free water Go to bathroom when you feel the need to have a BM Exercise Address SD
What are specialty tests for peritonitis?
Heel strike, rebound
