Define appreciation?
A proven method of problem solving following a series of steps to ensure the optimum course of action is decided upon. It considers all appropriate factors and weighs the benefits and risks of all alternative solutions. It is an ongoing process which involves thinking through each new piece of information as it is uncovered.
Benefits of an appreciation?
- Informs all police what they are expected to achieve.
- Increases the chances of success
- Establishes a sequence of activities to be carried out.
- Manages risk
- Reduces uncertainty
- Eliminates duplication
- Ensures nothing is overlooked
- Effective use of resources
When should a written appreciation be used?
A full written appreciation should be used for protracted situations, however in urgent or pressing situations where immediate action is required, a shortened form of appreciation is usually conducted mentally.

Aim?
The aim is a short (one line) statement which succinctly demonstrates a single objective.
Whst are the steps in formulating an aim?
- The aim must be clear, accurate and concise.
- The aim should be borne in the mind at all times when making decisions.
Define factors?
Any circumstance or fact that could possibly have an effect on the manner in which you will achieve your desired outcome.
Common factore to vonsidet?
- Further risk to life
- Location of possible suspects
- Resources available
- Evidence requiring preservation
- Environment and weather
- History of relevant parties
When considering each factor, what technique should be used?
Ask the question “so what does this mean?”
The answer leads to a logical conclusion where the key word “Therefore” is used to make a deduction.
Any deduction made should also be examined to determine whether further deductions can be made.
What are Courses open?
A list of possible ways an aim could be achieved, bearing in mind the factors and deductions made from those factors.
What should be considered when evaluating courses open?
Advantages, disadvantages and risks of each alternative must be carefully examined and evaluated.

- Which alternative is the most appropriate way to reach objective?
- From these considerations decide on most appropriate course to achieve your aim.

A plan is a proposed course of action designed to put the selected course into action in order to achieve the desired aim.
What must a plan be?
- The logical outcome of the appreciation.
- Clear, concise and leaves no room for misinterpretation
- Designed to avoid introducing matters not previously considered
- Consistently considerate of safety
