What is an appraisal
An appraisal is a method to assess the performance of an employee from different perspectives in different types.
Peer assessment
Different employees of similar status produce an assessments of performance on each other.
Managerial appraisal
A manager assess the performance of a subordinate below them.
Self assessed appraisal
The employee themselves assess there performance
360 degree appraisal
Every position within the business assesses you including yourself.
Target setting appraisal
Managers set realistic targets for employees to achieve.
Benefits of peer assessments
Assessing another employee may improve your own work
Work closely with the colleague so know them best
Sympathises with the job difficulties and understands why there colleagues behave the way they do
Drawbacks of peer assessments
Can be biased if the two employees are close
Take time to carry out because the workers have to do the assessment rather than produce goods and work.
Benefits of managerial appraisals
Have the context of the whole group of employees
Can compare more easily to other employees, thus making a better judgement
Less biased as they treat all employees the same
Drawbacks of managerial appraisals
Less likely to know the difficulty the worker is facing outside and inside of work
Could be bias to an employee that they either do or do not like.
Self assessment appraisal benefits
They know themselves best
Provides the employee with chances to reflect and improve themselves
Develops employee skills of critiquing themselves
Self assessment drawbacks
Most likely to be biased because they won’t want to admit to any wrongdoing, big problem if the firm finds one of the employees is breaking the regulations
Takes up workers time when they could be producing.
360 degree appraisal benefits
Will have the best possible image about an employee from bias and unbiased perspectives.
Can be more precise about who deserves rewards and promotions
Roots out bad apples and unmotivated workers.
360 degree appraisal drawbacks
The most time consuming
Likely costs the most
Can put the whole business on standby whilst being carried out
Why would you use appraisals
Can improve employee and employer weaknesses
Can solve disputes and root out bad apples
Help promote and reward the correct hard workers.
