What is an appraisal ?
A system of reviewing the performance of workers, usually a discussion between the worker and manager around pre-agreed objectives

- Self-assessment
- 360-degree feedback
- Superior’s assessment
What is a peer assessment ?
Where another employee will assess the performance of a colleague against agreed standards
What does a peer assessment highlight ?
Areas done well and making constructive suggestions for improvement
What are the advantages of peer assessments ?
- Encourage empowerment and team-based approach
- Improves performance
What are the disadvantages of peer assessments ?
- Person undertaking assessment may not skills to carry out appraisal
- May not be effective
- May create difficulties and demotivation
What is a self-assessment ?
Where the employee assesses their own performance
What does a self-assessment highlight ?
Areas done well and those that need improvement
What are the advantages of self-assessment ?
- Crease sense of empowerment
- Help motivate staff
What are the disadvantages of self-assessment ?
- Some find it difficult to be self-critical or balanced
- May become frustrated and demotivated
What is a 360-degree feedback ?
A method of appraisal that gathers feedback from a number of people in the organisation
What does a 360-degree feedback do ?
Gain a fairer and more detailed view of the employee’s performance against set objectives
What are the advantages of a 360-degree feedback ?
- All parties feel it is fair and balanced = greater trust and motivation for areas of improvement
- Improves credibility of the performance reviews
- Strengthens self development
