Host
The university representative who is responsible for the international scholar/staff member.
Host unit
The Purdue University department or unit that issues the invitation or offer to the international scholar/staff member
International Faculty
An International Scholar who is a tenured, tenure-track, clinical, professional, or research appointee, or a visiting faculty appointee where the visiting faculty member receives a wage from the University.
International Lecturers
An International Scholar with a Lecturer or Limited Term Lecturer appointment. Not faculty
International Postdoctoral Researchers
An International Scholar with a postdoctoral research appointment.
International Visiting Scholars
An International Scholar with a Visiting Scholar appointment, including visiting faculty appointments where the visiting faculty member does NOT receive a wage from the University.
International Staff
An employee of Purdue University, or an affiliate or partner of the University, who is not a US Person.
Scholarly activities
The process of asking International Scholar Services to begin a workflow for a Sponsored immigration benefit, such as a work visa status or permanent residence process. May be submitted only by Hosts or Host Units.
Sponsorship
The process by which the University requests or facilitates the approval or grant of immigration visa status to an International Scholar/Staff Member, on behalf of the Host Unit and/or Host.
Sponsored International Scholar or Staff
An International Scholar or Staff who has received their immigration visa status or permanent residence as a result of the University’s request.
Self-Sponsored International Scholar or Staff
An International Scholar or Staff who can apply for work permission, visa status, or permanent residence on their own, without a request by the University’s.
Visiting Scholar Appointment
An appointment — following Proper Recommendation — to engage in Scholarly Activities on the University campus for the mutual enrichment of both the appointee and Host Unit.
Postdocs
The recommended initial employment period for Postdoctoral Researchers to be included in the offer letter is three years. The period may be no more than three years, but may be less, if appropriate
LTL (Limited-term Lecturer)
Limited-term Lecturer contracts are made for one semester at a time.
Lecturer
Lecturer appointments must be renewed each academic year by the Board of Trustees’ approval of the annual operating budget for Purdue University or by approval of the President, or designee.
Tenured and Tenure-Track Faculty
Tenured faculty are considered indefinite employees of the university.
Even for tenure-track faculty, the intention is for the employment relationship to be indefinite, notwithstanding the offer/contract end date.
Clinical Faculty and Professors of Practice
C/P faculty are primarily devoted to the practice and scholarship of teaching and engagement. They do not primarily engage in research.

Research Faculty
Research Faculty positions are intended to provide a career path that allows for independence, individual scientific growth and the opportunity for promotion through scientific ranks.
An incumbent may not hold a tenure-track and a Research Faculty position simultaneously.
Appointments may be either academic year or fiscal year. Part-time appointments are allowed
Visiting Faculty
Expectation generally is that the focus is teaching.
May be paid too on occasion; historically most often is unpaid
