What is Varenicline?
A
- Trade name: Champix.
- Drug prescribed to help quit smoking.

How does Varenicline work?
A
- Affects dopamine release in brain.
- Binds to nicotine receptors and tricks brain into thinking its had nicotine, which leads to a small release of dopamine.
- This small dopamine release alleviates cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
- Reduces the rewarding effects of nicotine by blocking nicotine ability to access receptors and activate dopamine release.
- Smoke cigarette = less pleasure = may help quit.

- It has proven to be effective (extra support for role of dopamine).
- Most effective alongside other methods (dopamine alone can’t explain addiction).
