Q

How does Varenicline work?

A
  • Affects dopamine release in brain.
  • Binds to nicotine receptors and tricks brain into thinking its had nicotine, which leads to a small release of dopamine.
  • This small dopamine release alleviates cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
  • Reduces the rewarding effects of nicotine by blocking nicotine ability to access receptors and activate dopamine release.
  • Smoke cigarette = less pleasure = may help quit.
