Applications of genetics Flashcards
1
Q
Define transgenic organsims?
A
- Organisms which have received genes from another species
2
Q
State the process of genetic engineering?
A
- To genetically modify something, we use a vector called a plasmid
- You then cut the DNA you want to insert using a restriction enzyme
- You then use ligase to stick the pieces produce recombinated DNA
- Insert it into new cell
3
Q
After ligase has been used to attach the gene to the plasmid, the plasmid carrying the human DNA is refferred to as a…
A
- Vector
4
Q
What are some advantages and disadvantages of genetically modified crops?
A
Advantages:
- Higher crop yield/better food quality
- Disease resistant/pest resistant
- Less pesticides used
Disadvantages:
- Not accepted by public
- Long term affects are unknown
- Affects food chains
- Reduces variaton
5
Q
What is this machine called?
A
- Fermenter
6
Q
How does natural selection occur?
A
- MVARPS (Mutation, Variation, Advantage, Reproduction, Pass on allele, Several generations)
- There is a rare mutation
- This increases variation within the population
- The mutation gives organism an advantage and it reproduces
- They will pass on their advantageous alleles to the next generation
- Advantageous alleles will increase in gene frequency.
- The less well adapted organisms will decrease in numbers and therefore over time become extinct.

Q
How to bacteria become resistant to antibiotics?
A
- Doctor began using penecillin which killed bacteria
- A chance of a mutation gave some bacteria resistance to the antibiotic
- These bacteria were better adapted to an enviroment where pencillin was used
- They survived in greater numbers to reproduce and passed on the resistnace allele
- This was repeated with each generation of bacteria

Q
How do you clone a plant (Micropropagation)?
A
- Tips of shoots are cut off the plant
- The ex plants are sterilised
- Explants are then grown in vitro and are placed onto a nutrient gel which contains plant hormones to encourage shoot growth
- Cells in the explants divide and grow into a small plant
- The small plants are transferred to compost and grown in greenhouses.
9
Q
How do you clone a mammal?
A
10
Q
What does the restriction enzyme do?
A
- To cut the DNA
11
Q
What is Ligase used for?
A
- To join DNA
12
Q
Give an example of where we would use genetic engenering?
A
- Producing Insulin using fermenters
- The bacteria that contains gene is transgenic
