What are the step when counselling under-performing employees?
Stage 1: Confirming Standards
a) Ascertaining if the employee is aware of the standard, and if not bringing the standard to the employees attention
b) Obtaining commitment from the employee to meet the standards in the future
c) Providing the appropriate assurance from the employer to meet the requirements(ex coaching, training etc)
Stage 2: Reviewing performance
a) Reconfirmation of the performance standards that will be acceptable
b) Further counselling as to how standard can be met
c) A warning that persistent under performance may result in dismissal
Stage 3: Disciplinary action
Prove that
a) The employee did in fact fail to meet the performance standards
b) The employee was aware of the standard
c) The employee was given a reasonable opportunity to meet the standard
