Is minority influence more powerful than majority influence?

A

1) It’s common sense that majority influence is more powerful than minority influence because there are more voices, However evidence shows that minorities can be extremely powerful at changing public opinion

2) example = late 1800s- early 1900s suffragette movement fought for right for minority group = prepared to sacrifice overall wellbeing + in American civil rights movement =Rosa park sparked a social change

A

Moscovici has a theory and proposes 3 key elements
1) message of minority = consistent , change = ineffective
2) Minority must show the commitment to the cause
3) Argument must be persuasive for example charismatic representation through speech = majority change view internally + externally

in 2016, members of royal court spearheaded a campaign called heads together, Prince Harry talked about grief and depression when his Mother passed.
Prince William , Harry and duchess of Cambridge are charismatic , persuasive = widened audience hearing about MH

Time to change go into schools , discuss issues around stigma, mental health and train young people (often experienced discrimination first hand) to become leaders and teach abt stigma = role model

Snow ball effect ( Van Avermaet)
Members of minority slowly change to opinion of majority as more people adopt minority view = become majority view

one persons opinion changed … they tell family or friends = trigger the SB effect
