Appetite Regulation Flashcards
Where are there nutrient sensors?
GI. Lots in the colon. Enteroendocrine cells. Chemoreceptors on vagus . Stretch receptors
What is leptin?
Circulating satiety factor produced by adipose tissue.
Where is CCK synthesised?
I cells in duodenum
When is CCK released?
Released in response to fat and protein
What does CCK do?
Slows gastric emptying, releases bile and pancreatic enzymes. Activates nausea and taste aversion via vagus
Where is PPY released from?
L cells in GI tract
What does PYY do?
Inhibits NPY and activates POMC
What is insulin’s effect on satiety?
Inhibits NPY/ AgRP. Activates alpha MSG/ CART
What are PP and oxontymodulin?
Anorexigens. Decrease appetite; decreases ghrelin
Where is ghrelin synthesised?
Stomach
Where does ghrelin act?
Via vagus, directly on hypothalamus
What are neuropeptide Y and galanin?
Ore items
What parts of the hypothalamus regulate food intake?
Arcuate nucleus in the lateral part of ventromedial nucleus
What is the central anorexigenic pathway?
CART and POMC
What is the central orexigenic pathway?
AgRP and NPY
