- Believed TOV was too harsh

- It was an area that was demilitarised by TOV
- France and USSR had just signed a military pact against Germany
- UK didn’t oppose as it was German land
- Hitler went in just as the Abyssinian Crisis was occurring so they were distracted by LON problems

Due to the horrors of civilian bombing raids and the casualties it made British politicians determined to avoid war
How was Hitler able to achieve Anschluss
- Strong Nazi party in Austria
- Hitler used this to stir up trouble and his officers said that they would only stop if Anschluss was achieved
- Schuschnigg called for a plebiscite
- Hitler sent troops in to ‘ensure a fair vote’
- 99.75% vote in favour of Anschluss
Why did Hitler want Anchluss
- Wanted it to strengthen Germany
- His homeland
- Access to Austria’s industrial and human resources
- Unite German speaking people to greater Germnay
Why did Hitler want to invade the Sudetenland
- If Hitler took this it would be easy to take the rest of Czechoslovakia
- A lot of industry was taken by TOV
- Lot of Germans in area due to TOV

Hilter only asked Chamberlain for certain bits of Sudetenland
21st September 1938
He wanted all of Sudetenland as he needed to rescue Germans living there and said he would do so 1st October

2. Leaders announced that Hitler could have what he wanted (Czechs were not involved)

Hitler took over the rest of Czechoslovakia- different as this was an invasion
What was appeasement
The policy of UK/ France giving Hitler what he demanded, time after time, in hope each time was the last demand
Arguments for appeasement
- Standing up to communism
- Britain and France were doing anything to stop a war like WWI
- Britain needed more time to prepare
- Britain thought they could not do it without USA
Arguments against appeasement
- Encourage Hitler to become too aggressive
- It was based on Hitler being trustworthy
- Portrayed Britain and France as weak
- Allowed Germany to become too strong
