Apparatus Flashcards
How do I accurately record PH
use a digital PH data logger
How to accurately record mass
Use a digital mass balance that records to 2 dp
How to accurately record temperature
Use a digital thermometer
How to accurately record length
Use a ruler with mm increments
How to accurately record volume
Use a measuring cylinder or syringe with a high resolution eg 0.1 ml
What is a colorimeter
An instrument that can determine the concentration of a solution it turns qualitative colours into quantitative values based on the absorbance of light
When would you use a calorimeter?
When your results are qualitative eg different coloured solutions, and you need to turn it into quantitative values
When would you use a potometer
When you need to measure the rate of transpiration in plants, you would investigate the effect of a different variable on transpiration rate
List the glassware need it for serial dilution
Test tubes or boiling tubes beakers to hold the distilled water and original solution You are going to dilute
What is an eyepiece graticule?
A glass disc with a scale on it, that is inserted into the eyepiece of a microscope used to measure the size of specimens viewed under the microscope
How do you calibrate an eyepiece graticule?
Lineup the stage and the eyepiece graticule, whilst looking through the eyepiece count, how many divisions on the eyepiece graticule fit onto a division on the micro meter scale,
Why do you need to calibrate the eyepiece graticule?
Each time you change the objective lens, and therefore the magnification, you have to calibrate the eyepiece to work out the distance between each division represented at that magnification
