Apoptosis Flashcards
1
Q
Apoptosis
A
Apoptosis is the natural and controlled death of cells within the body.
2
Q
Why? apoptosis
A
Cells undergo apoptosis when they malfunction, are damaged, or become unnecessary. Signals initiate apoptosis, leading to the eventual death of the cell.
3
Q
Pathways of Apoptosis
A
There are two pathways of apoptosis: the mitochondrial and death receptor pathways.
4
Q
Intrinsic
A
Mitochondrial pathway is initiated by internal cellular damage (intrinsic pathway).
5
Q
Extrinsic
A
Death receptor pathway is initiated by extracellular death signaling molecules (extrinsic pathway).
6
Q
Caspase
A
Both pathways lead to the activation of caspase enzymes. Following caspase activation, the two pathways become nearly identical.
