apical diagnosis Flashcards
What are normal apical tissues?
Teeth with normal periradicular tissues that are not sensitive to percussion or palpation; intact lamina dura and uniform PDL space.
What is symptomatic apical periodontitis?
Inflammation at the apex causing pain on biting and/or percussion/palpation; may or may not have periapical radiolucency.
What is asymptomatic apical periodontitis?
Chronic inflammation at the apical periodontium with radiolucency but no symptoms.
What is an acute apical abscess?
An inflammatory reaction to pulpal infection and necrosis characterized by spontaneous pain, rapid-onset infection with pus, swelling, and tenderness to pressure.
What is a chronic apical abscess?
An inflammatory reaction to pulpal infection and necrosis characterized by gradual onset with little or no pain; presents with sinus tract and intermittent pus discharge.
What is condensing osteitis?
A diffuse radiopaque lesion at the apex representing localised bony reaction to a low-grade chronic inflammation.
