What are Aphthous Ulcers and when do they occur? (canker sore)

  • recurrent oral ulcers
  • common, begins in childhood/adolescence.

A

restricted to the oral cavity

lips, cheeks, tongue, floor/roof of mouth

Clinical Features of Aphthous Ulcers?

A
  • 2-4 mm shallow round/oval ulcer
  • solitary lesion (maybe a few)
  • ulcer floor= yellow–> as it heals= gray
  • has punched out appearance
  • surrounding erythema/edema
  • minimally symptomatic

Healing Stage= 1-3 weeks
(so ulcer can remain for 3 weeks!)

What is the TX/Rx for Aphthous Ulcers ?

A

Treatment is not necessary,

educate the patient….

 - they will likely occur (1-4 months)
 - avoid hard/rough food
 - avoid rough toothbrushing
  • Topical Steroids (kenalog) orabase paste
  • Refer if= manifestation of another disease

What are the recommendations to prevent dental caries?

A
  • brush 2x a day
  • clean between teeth w floss/interdental cleaner
  • eat nutritious/balanced meals
  • avoid sugary goods/drinks
  • no bottle in the crib

  • may lighten but will not resolve :)
  • will need aggressive whitening or veneers.
