Apheresis Exam 7 Flashcards
What is the general description of Apheresis?
Whole blood is removed from the body. It passes through an apparatus that separates out one or more particular blood constitutuent based on density (I think). The remaining components are returned back to the donor.
Therapeutic Apheresis is..?
Performed on a patient to remove a particular blood component for therapeutic purpose
Apheresis is…?
Performed on a donor to collect a specific blood component (blood Apheresis)
What is plasmapheresis?
Removal or collection of plasma from whole blood. Returns the rest of the components back to donor.
Plateletpheresis is?
Collection of platelets from whole blood
Erythrocytapheresis is…?
Collection of RBC from whole blood
Leukapheresis is?
Collection or removal of white blood cells from whole blood using Apheresis technology
How does Apheresis machine separate components from whole blood?
Impact of manipulation of the removed blood, and subsequent rein fusion of portions of the blood back to donor.
What are the two methods of centrifugation?
Intermittent flow centrifugation IFC
Continuous flow centrifugation CFC
What is the rationale of therapeutic Apheresis?
Rational is based on a pathologenic substance exists in the blood that contributes to a disease process or its symptoms. The substance can be more effectively removed by Apheresis than by the body’s own mechanisms.
