What is apheresis?
Apheresis is an extracorporeal therapy in which the blood is removed from the patient circulation and separated into its components, and one or more of the components is removed or processed before the blood is returned to the patient e.g. therapeutic plasma exchange
How much is removed per TPE treatment?
Approx 1-1.5 plasma volumes
How can apheresis be made safe for patients with blood volumes such that the extracorporeal circuit?
Prime the circuit with blood, plasma or colloid
What are the indications for TPE
MG, IMHA, and immune-mediated thrombocytopenia,
Toxin ingestion with a low VD
When does the author use TPE in IMHA
Needing one or more transfusions, not responding to immunosuppressants after 4 days.
