What is Aphasia?
A
- Aphasia is a disorder that affects how you communicate

What is Wernicke’s Aphasia?
A
- Due to a lesion in the superior temporal Gyrus
- Supplied by the inferior division of the left MCA
- This area forms the speech before sending it to the Broca’s area
- Lesions result in sentences that make no sense, word substitution and neologisms but speech remains fluent
- World Salad
- Comprehension is impaired

What is Broca’s Aphasia?
A
- Due to a lesion in the inferior frontal gyrus
- Supplied by the super division of the left MCA
- Speech is non-fluent, laboured, halting, repetition is impaired
- Comprehension is normal

What is Conduction Aphasia?
A
- A stroke affecting the arcuate fasiculus
- This is the lesion between Wernicke’s and Broca’s area
- Speech is fluent but repetition is poor
- Comprehension is normal

What is Global Aphasia?
A
- Large lesion affects all 3 of the above areas
- This results in severe expressive and receptive aphasia
