APC Flashcards
What are the four 4 main asbestos related diseases?
Cancers, such as mesothelioma and lung cancer, and other non-malignant lung diseases such as asbestosis, pleural plaques and pleural thickening.
What are the disadvantages of a distometers?
It does not function well in bright light and is difficult to use in very narrow spaces.
What is the downfall of RAAC?
The most notable concern with RAAC planks is their potential for sudden shear failure.
What typically causes shear failure in RAAC?
Shear failure is typically caused by issues with the steel reinforcement, especially at the ends of the planks.
Why are RAAC planks prone to sagging under similar loading conditions compared to normal concrete?
RAAC planks are prone to sagging because they have a high elastic modulus, leading to greater deflection. This issue is exacerbated if the planks are incorrectly detailed, working loads are underestimated, elements are undersized, or reinforcement is inadequate.
How can you identify Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) panels?
Dimensions: RAAC panels are typically 600mm wide.
Appearance: They have distinctive, regularly spaced V-shaped grooves and are usually white or light grey.
Proprietary Names: In records and drawings, RAAC panels might be referred to as Siporex, Durox, Celcon, Hebel, Xella, or Ytong.
Internal Structure: The inside of the planks appears bubbly, similar to an Aero chocolate bar, and there are no visible stones or aggregate.
What is Procurement in construction?
Procurement in construction refers to the crucial process of acquiring the necessary goods and services to successfully accomplish a construction project. It involves meticulously selecting the most suitable contractual arrangement, inviting tenders, and finalising the essential contracts needed to initiate the project.
What Is an Extension of Time in Construction?
An EOT (extension of time) is a request to move the completion date of a project due to causes that could not be foreseen at the time of contract signing.
What are some examples for Extension of Time in Construction?
Adverse weather conditions
Client change orders which are new or additional work not included in the original contract
The owner may delay the work
Latent conditions that are unknown when the contract is signed that may affect the completion date
Events beyond either party’s control
What is Sectional completion?
Where the construction Contract splits the works into sections or parts, usually to be started at different times, there will be multiple Completion dates set by the employer in respect of those different parts of the works.
When is HSE notifiable?
last more than 30 days and have more than 20 workers working at the same time at any point on the project OR exceed 500 person days of construction work
What is the purpose of Approved Document A?
Approved Document A provides guidance on the structural safety of buildings, ensuring they are designed and constructed to withstand various loads and forces
Which Approved Document covers fire safety regulations?
Approved Document B covers fire safety regulations, including measures to ensure safe escape routes, fire detection, and suppression systems.
What does Approved Document C address?
Approved Document C addresses site preparation and resistance to contaminants and moisture, ensuring buildings are protected from harmful substances and dampness.
Which document provides guidance on accessibility and facilities for disabled people?
Approved Document M provides guidance on accessibility and facilities for disabled people, ensuring buildings are inclusive and accessible to all.
