AP World Unit 7 Flashcards
Mexican Revolution 7.1
The Mexican revolution began as presidential candidate, Francisco Madero, was thrown in jail by opposing candidate Diaz. This act along with the resistance towards Diaz’s strong-armed policies, accommodation to foreign powers, and land reform all led to the Mexican Revolution. Madero eventually escaped jail and began forming resistance groups in El Paso. Along with the help of Francisco, “Pancho” Villa, they were able to defeat the Mexican troops and send Diaz into exile, thus winning the Mexican revolution.
LO1: Internal tensions within Mexico, such as the public backlash of Diaz’s policies and reforms, as well as external pressures from nearby countries such as the United States greatly contributed to the start and result of The Mexican Revolution.
Russian Revolution 7.1:
The Russian Revolution began as tensions between Russia’s rulers and the working class increased. The Russian rulers were hesitant to industrialize, thus harming the economy, which hurt the working class. As a result, in 1917, the Bolsheviks, an organization representing the working class under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin, seized power and constructed a communist government with Lenin in power.
LO1: There were not many external factors that contributed to the Russian Revolution. However, many internal tensions between the government and the working class caused the Russian Revolution.
Causes of WWl 7.2:
There were two types of “causes” of world war I. The immediate cause of world war l was undoubtedly the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian-Hungarian throne, by Gavrilo Princip. Gavrilo Princip was a member of the Black hand, a Serbian nationalist group devoted to ending Austro-Hungarian presence in the Balkans. After the assassination, Austrian-Hungry demanded that Serbia end all aggravation. When Serbia refused, Austria-HUngry declared war. Eventually, other European nations such as Russia and Germany began siding with either Serbia or Austria-Hungry thus creating the first world war.
LO2: Additionally, there were also long-term causes that contributed to the start of world war l. Militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism were all long-term causes of world war l.
Total War 7.3:
Total warfare was a new military strategy that emerged during world war l. Total war was the idea that the entire nation’s population and resources would be fully devoted to winning the war. In fact, even women contributed to the war by working in factories and producing resources.
LO3: There are a variety of methods a nation can use to win a war, however, during world war l, the concept of total war came about.
Great Depression 7.4:
The Great depression was a period in American history that was caused by agricultural overproduction and the crash of the stock market. Along with the abandonment of banks and skyrocketing inflation, Americans were left helpless and broke during this time period due to economic failure.
LO4: Many other countries other than America suffered due to the Great depression. Germany, which had substantial amounts of money invested in American banks lost tons of money while economies in Africa, Asia, and Latin America suffered because they depended on imperial nations. Similarly, Japan suffered as its economy was dependent on foreign trade.
New Deal 7.4:
The new deal was created by President Roosevelt as a response to the great depression. The new deal was meant to bring relief, recovery, and bring the country out of the great depression. The new deal specifically looked to improve the economy, improve Americans’ trust in the banking system, and rebuild the stock market.
LO4: The new deal was how the United States responded to the Great Depression. In fact, President Roosevelt used the new deal as a part of his presidential campaign as it appealed to the people.
Five Year Plans (Soviet Union) 7.4:
The five-year plan was initially introduced in Soviet Russia under Joseph Stalin. The five-year plan was meant to transform the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (also known as the USSR) into an industrial power. The five-year plan was generally focused on industrialization and “catching up with the west.”
LO4: Russia responded to its own economic crises and the Great Depression by putting its five-year plan in place. THe plan was meant to industrialize and strengthen Russia and its economy.
Fascist Corporatist Economy 7.4:
A fascist corporatist economy is the result of a fascist government. A fascist government appeals to extreme nationalism, glorifies the military, and blames problems/issues on ethnic minorities. A fascist corporatist economy Is a notion that sections of the economy, the employers, the trade unions, and the state officials are seen as separate parts of the same body. Each “section” was allowed to operate freely as long it supported the body as a whole. This ultimately caused the creation of a totalitarian state in which the government had complete control.
LO4: After world war two, multiple countries such as Italy and Germany turned to fascism, a form of government that supported extreme nationalism and a strong military. As a result both Germany and Italy eventually turned to totalitarian government.
Mandates 7.5:
Mandates were territories or colonies that were ruled by central European powers. The mandate system came about at the end of world war two when central powers such as Britain and France refused to give their colonies independence even though they promised them freedom for supporting the allied powers.
LO5: A continuity in territories after world war two was seen in Europe as England and France kept their previous colonies/teriitories.
Causes of WWll 7.6:
Multiple things caused world war two to occur, diplomatically the treaty of Versailles, the failure of appeasement, and the failure of the league of nations all help lead to world war two. Economically the great depression along with the treaty of Versailles led to tension between European nations. Similarly, the rise of Hitler along with the strengthening of Germany’s and Japan’s militaries led to a large division between the Axis and Allied powers.
LO6: The main causes of world war two were the treaty of Versailles, the great depression, the rise of Hitler, and the strengthening of militaries.
New Military Tech WWll 7.7:
New technology changed the way that people fought wars. Specifically, during world war two, the development of aircraft or airplanes was huge as aircraft allowed for fast transportation, surprise attacks, and allowed for secret nuclear attacks. In short, it added a whole new level to warfare. On the other hand, new medicine such as penicillin allowed for new medical technology to emerge.
LO7: The use of aircraft in warfare allowed for a whole new level of battle and strategy during world two. Thus, many powerful countries participating in world war two wanted to utilize new airborne technology.
Holocaust 7.8:
The Holocaust was a mass genocide that took place in Europe during world war two. The genocide was a result of Hitler’s persecution of all Jews in an attempt to create a perfect society. In an attempt to create a “perfect” society, Hitler also persecuted the elderly, disabled, ethnically diverse, and LGBTQ. Inhumane methods such as gas chambers were used to persecute millions of Jews while those who were allowed to live were forced to live in concentration camps.
LO8: Due to the Holocaust the Jewish population of the world plummeted and Jews lived in fear of such an atrocity happening again
Ukrainian Genocide 7.8:
The Ukrainian genocide was caused by Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union. Stalin created a plan to collectivize the Soviet Union by giving the government complete control of all farmland/the economy. There was large resistance in Ukraine, thus Stalin trapped all the Ukrainian people within their country and destroyed all their food and farmland. As a result, an unnatural famine was caused killing millions.
LO8: As a result of the genocide, Stalin was faced with more hate and resistance from the people of the Soviet Union. One may infer that events like the Ukrainian genocide may have led to countries in the Soviet Union seeking their independence.
