Autobiography
Is one type of biography, which tells a life story of its author, meaning it is a written record of the authors life. Rather than being written by someone else, and autobiography comes through the persons on pen, in his own words.
Memoir
A record of memories, and particular events that have taken place in the authors life. In fact, it is telling a story or an event from his life; an account that does not tell the full record of a life.
Cumulative sentence
A cumulative sentence is known as a loose sentence that starts with an independent clause or main clause, which is simple and straight, provides main idea and then adds subordinate element or modifies. It adds subordinate or modifying elements after the subject and the predicate.
Blank verse
Is a literary device defined as an un-rhyming verse written in iambic pentameter. In poetry and prose, it has consistent meter with 10 syllables in each line (pentameter).
Bildungsroman
A story of the growing up of a sensitive person who looks for answers to his questions through different experiences. Generally, such a novel starts with a loss or tragedy that disturbs the main character emotionally, he/she leaves on a journey to fill that vacuum
Bildungsroman
During the journey, the protagonist gains maturity gradually and with difficulty. Usually, the plot depicts a conflict between the protagonist in the values of society. Finally, he/she accepts those values and they are excepted by society, ending the dissatisfaction.
Illusion
a thing that is or is likely to be wrongly perceived or interpreted by the senses. A false idea or belief. A deceptive appearance or impression.
Foil
A foil is a character that shows qualities that are in contrast with the qualities of another character with the objective to highlight the traits of the other character.
Intertextuality
A sophisticated literary device used in writing. In fact, it is a textual reference within some text that reflects the text used as a reference. Instead of employing referential phrases from different literary work, intertextuality draws upon the concept, meteoric or ideology from other text to be merged in the new text.
Litotes
Derived from the Greek word meaning simple, is a figure of speech which employs an understatement by using double negatives, or in other words, positive statement is expressed by negating it’s opposite expressions. “Not too bad” “pretty good”
Utopia
The literary term utopia denotes a illusionary place that projects the notion of a perfect society to the reader.
Sonnet
Is derived from the Italian word “sonneto” it means a small or a little song or lyric. In poetry a sonnet has 14 lines and is written in iambic pentameter. Each line has 10 syllables. It has specific rhyme scheme and a “Volta” or a specific turn.
Round character
A round character in a novel, play, or story is a complex personality. Similarly, a round character has many layers like an onion. Writers define a round character fully both physically and mentally.
Vernacular
A literary gene that uses daily use language and writing and speaking.It is different from written works, As they normally follow the formal Variety of language. The word vernacular refers to writing or speaking of the public. We found the origin of vernacular Literature during the middle ages in different countries of Europe.
Vernacular vs. Dialect
Vernacular is the use of ordinary, every day in plain language in speaking or writing, such as corn is a common name of the plant, and it’s scientific name is maze or zea mays, Where as Dialect is related to a particular region, geographical area, a particular social class or an occupational group. Also it uses a distinguished pronunciation, vocab and grammar such as people in Shanghai has a different pronunciation or dialect than people in Yunnan.
