AP Stats Summer(part 1) Flashcards
What is statistics?
The study of of variability, the science of collecting, organizing, summarizing, analyzing, and making inferences from data
What is variability?
Differences or how things differ
What are two branches of AP Stats?
Inferential and Descriptive
What are Descriptive Stats?
Description of data collected such as mean, median, mode, etc…(numbers and pictures that describe the data set)
What are Inferential Stats?
Showing of the Big Picture by analysis of data(making inferences, making predictions)
Compare Descriptive and Inferential Stats
Descriptive tells you about the data you have at hand, inferential uses that information to say something about the bigger picture(extends to the world at large)
What is data?
Collected information (usually measurements)
What is a population?
The group targeted for study
What is a sample?
A subset of a population, often taken to make inferences about the population
Compare population to sample
populations are generally large, and samples are small subsets of these population. We take samples to make inferences about populations. We use statistics to estimate parameters
