AP Notes 17-20 Flashcards
Enumeration
A rhetorical device used for listing the detail or a process of mentioning word or phrases step-by-step. It’s a type of amplification or dilution in which a subject is further distributed into components or parts. Writers use it to clarify and detail understanding.
Analogy
A comparison in which an idea or a thing is compared to another thing that is quite different from it. It aims to explain that idea or thing by comparing it to something that is similar but different. Ex. Structure of an atom = Solar system
Parallelism
Use of components in a sentence that is grammatically the same; or similar in their construction, sound, meaning, or meter. Can be found in literature as well as ordinary conversations. Ex. Easy come, easy go. Like father like son.
Allusion
Brei and indirect reference to a person, place, or thing/idea of historical, cultural, literary or political significance. It does not describe in detail the person or thing to which it refers. It is a passing comment and the writer expects the reader to possess enough knowledge to spot the allusion and grasp its importance.
