AP Chem: Unit 1 Flashcards
What is Avogadro’s number?
6.022 x 10^23
How do you calculate the average atomic mass?
mass (%)+mass (%)+ mass (%)+ mass (%), etc
What is ionization energy?
The amount of energy required to remove an electron from an isolated atom or molecule. (He is the highest 1rst ionization energy. Increases to the top because electrons are closer to nucleus)
What are some examples of pure substances?
individual molecules: (CO^2) individual atoms: (Zn) ions held together in a fixed proportion: NaCl
Theoretical Yield VS Experimental Yield
theoretical yield - the amount of product you would get if you use up all of the limiting reagent experimental yield - the actual amount of product you obtain when performing a given experiment.
What energy level is the first to remove or lose electrons within a PES?
Valence electrons
Which energy level is the hardest to remove pertaining to the PES model?
Electrons closest to the nucleus. They have the highest binding energy Ex: 1s^2
What formula is % by mass of two elements?
mass %= element/ total compound
Which element is the biggest atom on the periodic table?
Fr (francium) has the most shells
Which element is the smallest atom on the periodic table?
He (helium) has the least amount of shells due to being in Group 8!
Which part of the periodic table is the only section of electron configuration that changes?
The middle part of the table, which are the transition metals.
