AOS3 - KK7 - Strategies to Improve Both the Efficiency and Effectiveness of Operations Related to Waste Minimisation Flashcards
Waste minimisation
Reducing the amount of unwanted or unusable resources provided by a business
Waste minimisation strategy
The 3R approach - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
What can be wasted during the operations system
- Material inputs (damage or perishment)
- Outputs (damage or overproduced)
- Time (supplies are delayed or employee is incompetent)
- Labour (employees have little to no work or highly skilled employees are given easy jobs that could be completed by a less experienced worker)
Reduce
Reducing is the process of decreasing the amount of material inputs, labour or time discarded during production
How can a business reduce the amount of waste they generate?
- Using the JIT approach
- Implementing a quality management system, such as quality control.
- Introducing robotics or automated production lines.
Reuse
Reusing is taking old or unwanted items and finding a new purpose for them
Recycle
Recycling involves processing and remanufacturing discarded materials, such as hard plastic, into a new product
How can the 3R approach ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ can improve the efficiency of operations
- Reducing storage costs (no need to purchase and store new material inputs).
- Reducing time (no need to purchase and wait for new material inputs to arrive).
- Reducing funds (no need to purchase as many new material inputs).
- Reducing waste (material inputs are no longer discarded).
