What usually plays the main melodic line in pop music?
The vocalist or lead singer. They are often the most well known member if they are part of a group.
What is a capella?
Singing without backing from other instruments
What is falsetto
Where singers (usually males) make thier voices go very high
What is riffing
(Think Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston)
When singers decorate their part by adding portamento. Usually comes at the end of the song, phrase or section.
What is the structure of many pop songs
Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus etc.
What is Britpop and what was it influenced by?
Britpop is British pop music from around the 1990s
It was a reaction to grunge American music (e.g. Nirvana) and was influenced by British Rock of the 60s 70s and 80s (e.g. The Beatles)
Key Britpop Bands?
Oasis, Blur, Suede
Instrumentation of Britpop?
Very similar to rock as the genre had influences to indie and glam rock.
Instruments included electric guitars, electrical bass, drum kit, vocalist with a focus on the guitar.
What was important about Britpop lyrics?
They were witty and about everday life. They were characterised by the singers’ noticeable British accent
Examples of girl or boy bands and what instruments did they play?
Spice girls, Backstreet Boys, One Direction, Destiny’s Child
They didn’t really play any instruments; instead they mostly just sung

The saxaphone
They often used a mixture of live instrumenst and synth sounds
