- Training and development done in the workplace
- Some examples of this is an apprenticeship and job shadowing

A
- Training is tailored to meet specific needs of the business
- Employee is actually working while learning and is therefore being productive
- Training may be sub-standard if mentor/coach is not trained in how to act in this role
- Trainer may pass bad habits to trainee, often without realising they are doing so

Off-the-job Training
A
- Training and development outside work in a formal training environment
- Some examples of this is role plays and simulations

- Wider range of skills can be taught and learned
- Learning from specialists and experts
- More expensive due to paying for course fees, transport and maybe accomodation
- Lost work time and potential output of employees while on training course
