The 5 steps of Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: what is it?
- Five levels of needs in a form of a pyramid
- Need to fulfil the level before to move higher up the hierarchy
What are the 5 needs in the Hierarchy?
- Physiological needs: the basic needs such as water, shelter and food to survive
- Safety needs: security and protection from physiological and emotional harm
- Social needs: acceptance and friendship in peer groups
- Self-esteem needs: external needs of status recognition and attention. Internal of self respect
- Self-actualisation needs: personal growth and self fulfilment
Locke and Latham’s Goal Setting Theory: what is it?
- A process theory of motivation
- Focuses on the process of creating and attaining goals.
- Address all principles when setting goals

Lawrence and Nohria’s Four Drive Theory: what is it?
- A theory that identify the four basic motivational needs that exist in all of us
- Manager needs to address all four to avoid conflict between employees
What are the 4 principles of Four Drive Theory
- Drive to acquire: basic survival, status and power
- Drive to bond: connect with other people, groups or business
- Drive to comprehend: understanding, contributing and learning
- Drive to defend: protect ourselves, friend, etc. from threats
What is performance-related pay?
- A financial reward to employees whose work has reached or exceeded a set standard
- Bonuses, increased wage or salary etc.
- Motivates employees by drive to acquire a financial reward (employee objective) which makes them to work more efficiently to acquire business objectives
What are 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of performance-related pay?
- Provides a direct financial reward to an employee
- Tangible way of recognising achievement
- Reduces equality in employee’s pay
- Demotivate if standard is too high
What is career advancement?
- Allowing employees the opportunity for promotion to a higher position within the business
- Motivates employees by building up confidence for them to work harder
What are 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages in career advancement?
- Acts as a reward to employees for their past performance
- Helps the business to retain it’s talented employees
- Potential to demotivate employees overlooked for promotion
- Employee could be promoted beyond their capabilities
What is investment in training?
- Employees gaining the skills and job knowledge through training and job experience to perform certain tasks
- Motivates by creating a positive culture and assist with team building
What are 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of investment in training?
- Demonstrates the business wants to advance the careers of employees
- Creates a sense of loyalty and attachment to the business
- Expensive investment if business has inefficient systems
- if employees in wrong jobs, won’t act as a motivator
What is support?
- Individual assistance and services in place to help employees with problems creating a negative impact
- Motivates by showing that the business cares about the well-being of employee creating a positive working environment
What are 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of support?
- Improves well-being of employees
- Builds strong culture
- Managers may not know the whole problem of the employee
- Requires positivity in workplace to be able to work
What is sanction?
- Encourages employees to work more efficiently by implying consequences in result of poor performance
- Motivates by fear which will force a better performance
