Q

how were you able to order the half equations in a series?

A

solid metal reacts = stronger reductant, oxidises

by completing a series of reactions the order can be determined

Q

benefit of galvanic cells on society

A

storage of extra energy created by renewable sources for later use = reduces consumption of fossil fuels

applications in transportable devices including medical devices = saves/greatly improves the quality of people’s lives

Q

why can the pH measurement be the same if weak acid is used instead of strong acid?

A

strong acids fully deprotonate, weak acids only partially deprotonate

a more concentrated weak acid can have the same pH as a more dilute strong acid (same [H3O+])

Q

why are metals on the left side of the periodic table more easily oxidised and stronger reducing agents?

A

a stronger reducing agent is more easily oxidised and loses electrons more easily

elements on the left side of the periodic table lose electrons more easily due to lower core charge/first ionisation energy
