Aortic Dissection and Aneurysm Flashcards
1
Q
Aortic Dissection (what is it)
A
Intimal tear with dissection through media
2
Q
2 Requirements for Aortic Dissection (& how to get)
A
- Stress - usually occurs in proximal 10cm of aorta
- Weakness of media - HTN results in hyaline arteriolosclerosis and decreased perfusion through vaso vasorum, causing media atrophy. Can also get with CTD like Marfan’s or EDS
3
Q
Most Common Cause of Death in AD
A
Pericardial tamponade
4
Q
Cause of Thoracic Aneurysm (& hallmark)
A
Weakness in aorta wall, classically seen in tertiary syphilis, which causes endarteritis. “Tree-bark” apperance of aorta
5
Q
Major Complication of Thoracic Aneurysm
A
Dilatation of aortic valve root, resulting in aortic valve insufficiency
6
Q
Location of AAA
A
Below renal arteries but above aortic bifurcation
7
Q
Classic Demographic Presentation/Cause of AAA
A
Atherosclerosis causes weakening of wall - male smokers > 60 years old w/ HTN
8
Q
AAA Size Threshold for Rupture
A
5cm
