Psychological Dependence

A
  • Form of dependence involving emotional, motivational withdrawal-like symptoms (negative emotions that motivate someone to continue engaging in their addiction)
  • Can occur with physical dependence or can occur independently of physical dependence

Tolerance

A
  • Involves a reduced response to the drug so that more of the drug is required to have the same effects (desired and undesired, e.g more happiness but also more nausea for alcohol)
  • Occurs as a result of a sustained use of a tolerance forming drug

(Extra) Behavioural Tolerance

A
  • When a individual learns through repeated exposure to a drug to adjust their behaviour to compensate for the impacts of the drug
  • E.g an alcoholic learns to talk slower so they don’t slur their words
