Anxiety, stress & arousal (franks) Flashcards
Describe under arousal
Low energy, attention field too broad, easily distracted.
Describe optimum arousal
ideal attention field, max concentration.
Describe over arousal
Attention field too narrow (hypervigilance), high tension.
What level of arousal are gross and simple skills performed at?
High arousal (require large muscle movements)
What level of arousal are fine and complex skills performed at?
low arousal (small muscles with lots of decisions)
What does inverted U theory state?
the relationship between performance and arousal.
what does catastrophe theory state?
that arousal improves performance up to a certain point then there is a sudden drop due to somatic (body) and cognitive (mind) effects.
LCOR for catastrophe theory
First there is the sudden dramatic collapse due to high levels of somatic and cognitive anxiety. Then arousal increases but performance dropping more gradually. Then cognitive anxiety reduces leading to increased performance.
what is ZOF stating
the characteristics of those who reach maximum performance. Such as: confidence, fluency, effortless, high focus, risk takers, enjoyable. This depends on what personality you have e.g. more in zone due to arousal would be an extrovert.
what is Peak flow?
pyhscological state you are in when you reach ZOF. Somatic anxiety is optimum and low cognitive.
name 4 stressors
audience, performance worry, importance of match, close matches.
what is enjoyable stress known as?
eustress
What is the reversal theory?
athlete interprets high arousal as a positive thing instead (eustress).
trait anxiety
natural high level of anxiety
state anxiety
level of anxiety you feel due to situation
