What is globus hystericus?
Experience of not being able to swallow, or eat, typically associated with anxiety (Described as a lump in the throat)
What are the amygdalae?
An almond shaped set of neurones forming part of the limbic system. It processes fear and pleasure responses
What is pavlovian conditioning?
The process whereby we will associate an initially innocuous stimulus with a particular response if that stimulus is repeatedly presented along with another stimulus that provokes a response.
Characteristics of General anxiety disorder?
Excessive and inappropriate worrying that is persistent.
Conditions associated with GAD?
Major depression Panic disorder Phobic anxiety disorders Health anxiety OCD
Characteristics of panic disorder?
Recurrent unexpected surges of severe anxiety (Panic attacks)
How is a panic attack differentiated from general anxiety
Panic attacks are intense, sudden increase in severe and often disabling anxiety
Has to increase quickly
Characteristics of social anxiety disorder?
Marked, persistent and unreasonable fear of being observed or evaluated negatively by other people.
What is simple phobia?
Excessive or unreasonable fear of single people, animals, objects, or situations.
Characteristics of PTSD?
History of exposure to trauma which is associated with a response of intense fear, helplessness or horror.
Characteristics of health anxiety?
Excessive or disproportionate preoccupations with having or acquiring a serious illness
Characteristics of OCD?
Recurrent obsessive ruminations, images or impulses and or recurrent physical or mental
What are obsessions?
Ideas thoughts or impulses that are excessive, unreasonable and intrusive.
