What is meconium?
Meconium is a baby’s first stool, it is black and tar like
When does an infant gain sphincter control?
Infants gain sphincter control at age 2 (usually the age for toilet training)
What is a gastrocolic reflex?
- It controls the motility, or peristalsis of the GI tract
- An increase of motility of the colon in response to stretch in the stomach and byproducts of digestion in the small intestine
What is benign prostatic hypertrophy
Enlarge prostate gland
What symptoms might be caused by benign prostatic hypertrophy?
As the prostate gets bigger, it may squeeze or partly block the urethra, often causing problems with urination
How would benign prostatic hypertrophy be assessed?
Can be assessed by a prostate specific antigen (PSA), or digital recal exam
What are the risk factors for colon cancer?
- 65 or older
- High fat diet, or obesity
- Inactivity
- African descent
- Family history
What does the normal peri-anal area look like?
- Anus should be moist and hairless
- Skin has darker pigmentation
- Opening is closes, no lesions, and no discharge
How would a patient be positioned for peri-anal assessment?
Patient should be in either a left lateral position, a lithotomy position or standing
What is the purpose of a digital rectal exam?
Done during a complete physical examination to check the prostate exam.
