ANTS & PETS Flashcards
What does ANTS stand for in coaching psychology?
Automatic Negative Thoughts – habitual, unhelpful thoughts that arise quickly in response to everyday triggers.
Give an example of an ANT.
“I’m such a failure.” / “They probably think I’m incompetent.” / “I’ll mess this up, like I always do.”
What does PETS stand for in coaching psychology?
Positive Energising Thoughts or Statements – constructive, realistic self-talk that supports resilience and growth.
Give an example of a PET.
“This is tough, but I’ve managed challenges like this before.” / “Mistakes are part of learning.” / “I’ve got the resources to figure this out.”
How do ANTs affect behaviour?
They trigger self-doubt, anxiety, procrastination, or defeatist behaviour – often without conscious awareness.
How do PETS help in coaching?
They promote self-efficacy, motivation, and constructive action by reframing challenges and supporting a growth mindset.
