drug of choice for TB. Metabolized in the liver through acetylation (watch for slow acetylators-accumulation of the drug. Leads to a longer half life). Used alone or in combination with other agents

peripheral neuritis, hepatotoxicity
Effectiveness depends on: type of infection, adequate dosing, sufficient duration of treatment, selection of effective drug combination

Fatigue, N & V, numbness/tingling of extremities, fever, loss of appetite, depression, jaundice neuritis, blindness (ethambutol), discoloration of urine and stools (reddish orange), hepatitis (rifampin)
