Antipyretics MEDICATION-SIDE EFFECTS Flashcards
GI- gastritis, dyspepsia, ulcers, bleeding
Renal impairment
Allergy
Aspirin
GI- gastritis, dyspepsia, ulcers, bleeding
( selective cox 2 inhibitors are known to cause an increase risk of thrombotic events like MI and stroke
Ex. Celecoxib (Celebrex)
Ibuprofen
Few liver toxicity in high doses, regular doses
Acetaminophen
Allergy,
GI- diarrhea, dyspepsia
Renal impairment can cause penicillins to accumulate to toxic levels
Suprainfections possible
Ampicillin
Allergy,
GI- diarrhea, dyspepsia
Renal impairment can cause penicillins to accumulate to toxic levels
Suprainfections possible
Augmentin
Risk of increased bleeding with warfarin because of interference with vitamin k metabolism
Allergy
GI upset: diarrhea and pseudo membranous colitis
Immune-related hemolytic anemia
Can promote clostidrium difficile super-infection
Cefazolin
Ototoxic and nephrotoxic
Adjust for renal impairment
Gentamycin
Can cause tendon rupture or tendonitis
Photosensitivity
Candida suprainfections, especially of the oropharynx
Infrequent but serious cns effects
Cifrolaxacin (Cipro)
Discoloration of developing teeth
GI distress (epigastric burning, cramps, nausea, vomiting, diárrhea)
Photosensitivity
Candidiasis
‘tetracycline
Hypersensitivity reactions are most concerning:
Rash, including rare steven-johnson syndrome
Heme:hemolytic anemia and other blood dyscrasias (agranulocytosis leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, aplastic anemia)
Crystalluria- kidney stones, bladder stones
CNS- headache, psychosis
Trimethroprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ)
Bactrim
IV erythromycin and azithromycin are corrosive to veins.
Some forms of erythromycin are corrosive to GI tract and can cause erosive esophagitis
Erythromycin
Ototoxicity and dose-related nephrotoxicity
Multiple drug interactions with hyperlipidemic drugs, muste relaxants and ototoxic drugs
Irritating to the vein causing thrombophlebitis (use large vein and change site often
Rapid infusion can cause “red man syndrome”
Vancomycin
Cytochrome p450 interactions
Darkening of urine
CNS e adverse effects
Caution during pregnancy during lactation
Metronidazole (flagyl)
